BitcoinVersus.Tech reported in April 2025 that Nasdaq planned to move toward nearly round-the-clock stock trading in 2026. That plan now has a launch date.
Nasdaq says its new overnight session will begin on December 6, 2026, running from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m. ET. Combined with existing pre-market, regular and after-hours sessions, that will create 23 hours of trading per weekday, with a one-hour pause from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. ET for processing and trade-date rollover.
The infrastructure is also moving from proposal to implementation. The SEC approved extended operating hours for the consolidated market-data processors in June, while Nasdaq’s October technical notice says new versions of Nasdaq Last Sale and TRF FilterView are being rolled out specifically for the 23-hour trading day. Nasdaq says the overnight session will use a second independent matching engine.
The change does not eliminate risk. SEC Commissioner Mark Uyeda has warned that thinner overnight liquidity could reduce execution quality in some securities and raise questions around staffing, cybersecurity, clearing and market resilience. Nasdaq says the regular 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. session and its opening and closing crosses will remain the primary price-setting benchmarks.
The move also adds context to BitcoinVersus.Tech’s recent coverage of Nasdaq-related market regulation: U.S. exchanges are not becoming fully 24/7, but the traditional trading day is becoming much less tied to U.S. daytime hours.
