Sony has launched the ECM-W5, a wireless microphone kit built around two transmitters and one receiver, with direct-to-camera 32-bit float audio, onboard backup recording and a claimed line-of-sight range of up to 500 meters. The kit is priced at $399.99 in the U.S. and is due in November 2026, according to Sony’s October 14 announcement.

Sony’s official ECM-W5 product video demonstrates the wireless recording workflow.

On compatible cameras, Sony’s Multi Interface Shoe can carry the digital audio directly into the video file, reducing separate audio syncing. Each transmitter also has 64 GB of internal storage for backup. The system supports 96 kHz/24-bit recording, while 32-bit float operates at 48 kHz. USB Type-C support connects the system to compatible phones and PCs, while Bluetooth can be used for additional wireless workflows.

A live Reddit discussion tracks early reaction to Sony’s new wireless microphone system.

The important technical caveat is that 32-bit float is not magic. Sony notes that audio clipped at the microphone’s analog input stage cannot be recovered later, and the 500-meter figure assumes line of sight; obstacles and RF conditions can reduce range. Independent PetaPixel coverage similarly frames the product around workflow reliability rather than a claim that clipping is impossible.

For creators, the larger trend is convergence: camera audio, internal backup, timecode, USB connectivity and mobile-device accessories are collapsing into one portable system. Our guide to mobile accessories and ports covers the connection layer behind that workflow.
