D-Wave has delivered a 4,400-plus-qubit Advantage2 annealing quantum computer to Lombardy for installation at Villa Saporiti in Como, giving Italy its first on-premises system of this type. In its October 15 announcement, D-Wave said the machine will operate within the Q-Alliance ecosystem under the name VoltaB1.
The installation follows a €10 million agreement with Swiss Quantum Technology SA. SQT acquired 50% of the system’s capacity for five years and holds an option to purchase the full machine. Once operational, Advantage2 will also be reachable through D-Wave’s Leap cloud service. Quantum Computing Report independently confirmed the delivery and agreement structure.
Advantage2 uses quantum annealing rather than the gate-model approach pursued by many other systems. BitcoinVersus.Tech has followed both paths through D-Wave’s gate-model simulator, its extended U.S. quantum-chip manufacturing deal, and the photonic architecture behind ORCA’s PT-3 quantum computer.
The system is scheduled for formal inauguration on October 16. For Italy, the significance is less about owning a quantum computer as a symbol and more about placing production-grade hardware close to universities, companies and researchers who can test optimization and materials workloads directly. That gives the country a local base for training, application development and industrial experimentation instead of relying only on remote access to overseas hardware.
