AI and Bitcoin Miners Continue to Partner as Anthropic Reportedly Lands $9.1 Billion Riot Deal

The merge between Bitcoin mining infrastructure and artificial intelligence is accelerating, with Riot Platforms announcing one of the sector’s largest AI data-center agreements yet.

Riot confirmed a 20-year lease covering 191 MW of critical IT capacity at its Rockdale, Texas campus, with the initial contract expected to generate approximately $9.1 billion in revenue.

Riot identified the customer only as one of the world’s leading frontier AI labs, while Bloomberg subsequently reported that the tenant is Anthropic, the company behind Claude.

The project will transform another major piece of infrastructure originally associated with large-scale Bitcoin mining into capacity for AI and high-performance computing. Riot plans to deliver the first 96 MW in December 2027 and the full 191 MW by June 2028.

The base agreement runs through June 2048, while two optional five-year extensions could increase the total contract value to approximately $16.1 billion. Riot’s Rockdale campus already has a 700 MW grid interconnection, fiber connectivity and dedicated power infrastructure, characteristics that help explain why established mining campuses are becoming attractive locations for AI data centers.

The reported Anthropic agreement is also the latest example of AI companies and Bitcoin miners increasingly occupying the same infrastructure ecosystem.

Riot already hosts AMD at Rockdale and has now contracted 241 MW of critical IT capacity between its two major AI tenants. Other miners have pursued similar strategies, including TeraWulf, which announced a separate 20-year Anthropic lease in July 2026.

Rather than making Bitcoin mining obsolete, the trend demonstrates the strategic value miners accumulated through years of building high-power campuses, substations, electrical distribution systems, cooling infrastructure and grid relationships. In the AI era, those megawatts can increasingly support both hashes and tokens.
