AI Selloff Hits Bitcoin Mining Stocks Harder Than Bitcoin

Bitcoin mining rigs and AI data-center infrastructure shown during a market selloff.

The latest AI selloff is exposing a second source of volatility inside Bitcoin mining stocks: many of the sector’s largest public miners are no longer trading only on Bitcoin production, hashprice and power costs. They are increasingly being valued as AI and high-performance-computing infrastructure companies as well.

That shift became visible on October 14. IREN fell 12.2%, Cipher Digital dropped 12.4%, Hut 8 fell 10.5%, Riot Platforms declined 9.4%, CleanSpark lost 9.1% and MARA fell 9.7%. Bitcoin, by comparison, moved from about $83,095 at the start of the day to roughly $81,562 by the close, a decline of about 1.8%.

The gap does not mean every miner fell for exactly the same reason. Cipher was also dealing with financing and dilution concerns around an $850 million convertible-note deal, while MARA and CleanSpark remain highly sensitive to Bitcoin itself. But the scale of the move shows that public miners with data-center ambitions are increasingly carrying both crypto beta and AI-infrastructure beta.

Investor discussion around Hut 8 on October 15 centered on whether miners with AI exposure are being sold together with neocloud and data-center stocks.

Why the AI downturn matters to miners now

The immediate pressure is coming from the cost of capital. Reuters reported that the Nasdaq fell toward a one-month low as investors reacted to hotter inflation, higher expected interest rates and growing concern about debt-funded AI expansion. CoreWeave became the center of the stress after its borrowing costs climbed sharply and investors questioned whether future AI revenue would justify the financing behind its buildout.

That matters to Bitcoin miners because the AI pivot is capital-intensive. Converting mining campuses into AI facilities can require new substations, liquid-cooling systems, networking, fiber, backup power, server halls, GPUs and long construction schedules. Higher rates raise the cost of financing those projects and can compress the present value of revenue expected years in the future.

BitcoinVersus.Tech flagged that pressure one day earlier in AI Debt Is Flashing a Warning Signal. The current miner selloff is the next layer of the same story: firms that were rewarded for becoming AI infrastructure plays can also be repriced when investors question how aggressively the entire AI buildout is being financed.

The miners with the largest AI exposure

Hut 8 is one of the clearest examples. Its second-quarter results listed 949 MW of contracted AI data-center capacity, about $26.6 billion in expected aggregate base-term contract value and more than $1.75 billion in expected average annual net operating income. Those contracts give Hut 8 substantial long-term revenue visibility, but they also mean the stock now trades partly on confidence in the financing, construction and AI-demand assumptions behind large data-center projects.

Riot Platforms has also crossed that line. Its Rockdale campus now supports a 191 MW frontier-AI data-center lease worth about $9.1 billion over the initial term, in addition to contracted AMD capacity. BitcoinVersus.Tech covered that shift in AI and Bitcoin Miners Continue to Partner. When AI valuations weaken, Riot is therefore no longer insulated simply because it still mines Bitcoin.

CleanSpark sits in the same hybrid category. Its Sandersville, Georgia, AI campus carries approximately $6.6 billion in contracted revenue, supported by more than $2.2 billion in secured project financing. That project is a major reason the company is increasingly discussed as a data-center developer rather than only as a miner. BitcoinVersus.Tech previously detailed that transition in CleanSpark Closes $2.276 Billion for 175 MW AI Campus.

IREN, Core Scientific and Cipher Digital are exposed to the same repricing mechanism through AI cloud, HPC hosting and data-center development. IREN’s shares have fallen more than 20% over five trading days, while Core Scientific has fallen sharply over the past month despite its large CoreWeave hosting agreement. Cipher has been hit by both the AI-sector drawdown and investor concern over fresh financing.

This earlier breakdown of CoreWeave explains why leverage and financing costs can become a central risk for AI infrastructure companies.

The downside is now two-sided

Traditional mining stocks were already exposed to Bitcoin price, network difficulty, machine efficiency and electricity costs. The AI pivot added another potential source of revenue, but it also added exposure to tenant credit, project financing, construction schedules, GPU economics and the valuation cycle around artificial intelligence.

That means a miner can now be pressured even when Bitcoin itself is relatively stable. A weak BTC tape hurts mining revenue. A weak AI tape can compress the value investors assign to data-center contracts and future HPC revenue. When both fall at the same time, the stocks can move far more sharply than either underlying market.

The distinction investors will increasingly have to make is between companies borrowing heavily to speculate on future demand and companies that already have long-duration leases, stronger counterparties and project-level financing in place. The current selloff is not proof that miner-to-AI conversions have failed. It is proof that the market has stopped treating every megawatt of AI capacity as equally valuable.

For Bitcoin miners, that is a major change. The sector spent the past two years trying to escape dependence on mining economics alone. It succeeded—but the reward came with a new risk: when confidence in AI infrastructure falls, the miners that became data-center stocks can fall with it.
