Canadian artificial intelligence developer Cohere announced Thursday, October 29, that it has completed an initial close of a Series E financing round targeting up to C$7 billion (approximately US$4.5 billion), with the Canadian government planning an equity investment of up to C$1.6 billion. The Toronto-based company says the funding will support AI models, enterprise software and computing infrastructure.
Germany’s Schwarz Group, owner of Lidl and Kaufland, is leading the financing. NVIDIA, Bell Ventures, Bullhound Capital, Inovia Capital and Prosperity7 Ventures are also among the backers. Cohere said the funding target implies a C$35.7 billion valuation, but did not disclose how much money changed hands at the initial close or when the full round will finish.
Canada Secures Jobs and Computing Investment
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the government’s proposed stake in Montréal, framing the investment as a way to keep advanced AI development under Canadian ownership and jurisdiction. Under commitments announced by Ottawa, Cohere plans to create at least 1,000 Canadian technical jobs and invest another C$1.7 billion in computing infrastructure by 2030. It will retain its Canadian incorporation and headquarters.
The government said its investment will be staged and accompanied by progress reporting. That provides a mechanism to track the company’s promised hiring and infrastructure spending, although the timing and precise financial terms of the government’s ownership stake were not disclosed.
Cohere Looks to Expand Beyond North America
Cohere specializes in models and software for businesses and governments that want control over sensitive data and where AI workloads run. It reported 165% year-over-year growth in annual recurring revenue in the third quarter and said it now serves 300 customers. The company is also pursuing a transatlantic strategy involving German developer Aleph Alpha and Schwarz Group’s STACKIT cloud platform.
The financing comes as European and Canadian firms pursue alternatives to U.S.-based AI platforms. Recent projects, including sovereign AI infrastructure partnerships and German AI investment initiatives, reflect broader interest in building local capacity. Cohere’s challenge is to translate the funding commitments into competitive products and sustained customer growth while meeting its Canadian jobs and spending targets.
