London-based Barclays plans to reduce its worldwide workforce by approximately 5,000 positions in 2026, about 5% of employees, as it modernizes technology and targets lower costs. The British bank disclosed the reductions alongside its October 22 third-quarter results. Around 1,000 positions had already been eliminated, with approximately 4,000 more expected before year-end.
The bank’s investor presentation says roughly 60% of the restructuring actions involve support functions, including software developers. The reductions remain subject to collective and individual consultation where required. Barclays did not establish that AI alone caused all 5,000 job losses.

Where AI Fits Into the Cuts
Chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan described AI as an additional benefit layered onto years of infrastructure modernization, rather than the sole driver. Group finance director Anna Cross connected fewer developer roles to improved productivity as AI tools expand. Barclays expects more than £1.1 billion in gross efficiency savings in 2027, according to its October presentation.

The announcement adds a concrete banking example to the debate over how automation changes employment. Our analysis of long-term automation and jobs provides historical context, while new developer automation tools show how software workflows are shifting.
Profits Rise While Jobs Disappear
Barclays reported approximately £2.3 billion in third-quarter pretax profit, up 12% year over year, although earnings missed expectations amid weaker fixed-income trading. The bank disclosed £201 million in third-quarter structural cost actions and a further £500 million share buyback. These financial results do not independently establish how much labor cost AI has already saved.

The Unite union opposed the plan, arguing that the bank should prioritize retraining workers rather than replacing them. Its October 22 statement calls for negotiated protections and human oversight as technology changes. The disagreement centers on who benefits from productivity gains.
The Next Test
Barclays has not publicly provided a complete country-by-country or compulsory-redundancy breakdown. Consultation outcomes and its year-end headcount will determine how closely the 2026 plan matches actual departures.
