An electrical schematic is a symbolic representation of how components within an electrical or electronic system are connected.
Rather than attempting to reproduce the physical appearance of a circuit board or machine, schematics use standardized symbols to describe components and electrical relationships.

A technician can therefore examine a schematic and understand the intended current paths, power sources, switches, resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors and other devices before physically inspecting the equipment.
Learning schematic symbols is similar to learning the vocabulary of a technical language. Common drawings represent batteries, grounds, switches, resistors, capacitors, diodes, transistors, relays, inductors, transformers, fuses and electrical meters.

Connections are equally important. When conductors intersect with a junction dot, the dot normally indicates an electrical connection between those conductors. Lines crossing without a junction indication may represent wires that simply pass one another without electrically connecting, depending on the schematic convention being used.
Following these paths allows a technician to trace voltage, current and signals through an entire system.

A technician can begin at the power source, trace the expected circuit path through components and compare expected behavior against measurements taken with a multimeter or oscilloscope. This relationship between schematic interpretation and physical measurement is one of the foundations of electrical diagnostics.
