SoftBank Raises $11.1 Billion for AI Push

SoftBank has raised $11.1 billion through dollar- and euro-denominated bonds as the technology conglomerate dramatically expands its investments across artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The transaction is the largest high-yield corporate bond sale globally on record, according to Reuters and LSEG data. A major purpose of the financing is funding the final $10 billion tranche of SoftBank’s $30 billion follow-on investment in OpenAI. Once completed, SoftBank’s total investment in OpenAI is expected to reach approximately $64.6 billion.

But SoftBank’s strategy now reaches far beyond AI software.

The company is acquiring ABB‘s robotics business for $5.4 billion and data-center investment company DigitalBridge for $3.1 billion. Its broader AI strategy spans semiconductors, robotics, data centers and large language models.

The financing also connects directly with SoftBank’s enormous physical AI infrastructure ambitions. BitcoinVersus.tech previously covered the company’s Stargate AI data-center expansion, part of an industry-wide race to secure computing capacity and electrical power for increasingly large AI systems.

The scale of the bond offering demonstrates another side of the AI infrastructure boom: building the next generation of computing requires enormous amounts of capital alongside chips, servers, power and data centers.

SoftBank is positioning itself across nearly every layer.
