Eaton Buys COL Group for €810 Million to Expand Data Center Power

Eaton has agreed to acquire Italy’s COL Group for €810 million, expanding its European manufacturing footprint as data centers and utilities drive demand for medium-voltage electrical infrastructure.

COL designs and manufactures medium-voltage power-distribution equipment, including SF₆-free switchgear, grid-automation systems and modular electrical equipment. Eaton said the company employs approximately 400 people across four manufacturing locations in Italy.

The acquisition strengthens Eaton’s European production capacity at a time when AI data centers are increasing demand for equipment between the utility grid and computing load. Medium-voltage switchgear performs a fundamental job in that chain: safely controlling, protecting and isolating electrical distribution before power is transformed and delivered deeper into the facility.

That infrastructure is becoming increasingly important as operators pursue higher-voltage and higher-density power architectures. BitcoinVersus.tech recently covered the industry’s move toward medium-voltage equipment and 800 VDC AI data-center power systems, where reducing conversion stages can help support increasingly dense computing loads.

Eaton describes its strategy as a grid-to-chip approach, covering electrical infrastructure from utility connections through the data-center power train. Adding COL’s medium-voltage portfolio gives Eaton additional manufacturing capacity and technology for both utility modernization and data-center construction in Europe.

The transaction is expected to close during the first quarter of 2027, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
