UL Launches 800 VDC AI Data Center Power Certification

UL Solutions has launched a new certification program for medium-voltage solid-state power units, adding a formal safety-evaluation path for an emerging power architecture designed for high-density AI data centers.

This is not a public or individual technician certification. The program is intended for manufacturers within the industry seeking certification of qualifying medium-voltage power equipment. It should not be confused with a training course or professional credential that members of the public can enroll in and earn.

The program is based on UL 2877, Outline for Investigation for Power Supplies, Medium Voltage. UL 2877 covers power supplies with AC or DC input ratings above 1,000 volts and up to 38 kV, with output ratings up to 38 kV.

The technology is particularly relevant to the industry’s move toward 800 VDC AI data-center power distribution. Medium-voltage solid-state power units can use power electronics to convert and reduce voltage, enabling more direct medium-voltage-to-800 VDC conversion. That can reduce the number of power-conversion stages between utility infrastructure and high-density computing equipment.

UL Solutions says its evaluations address electrical protection, insulation, grounding, enclosures, safety interlocks, wiring and product markings. Testing also examines operation under high temperatures, excessive electrical loads, voltage spikes and short-circuit current conditions.

The certification arrives as AI infrastructure pushes electrical design beyond conventional data-center architectures. BitcoinVersus.tech previously examined the shift in 800 VDC data-center hardware and power architecture, where higher rack power densities are driving changes from the utility connection all the way to the rack.

For manufacturers, the new UL Solutions program provides a defined route to demonstrate that emerging medium-voltage solid-state power equipment meets applicable safety requirements. For technicians and the general public, however, it is important to distinguish equipment certification from a personal certification: this program is manufacturer-facing and is not open to the public as an individual credential.
