Anousheh Ansari: From Engineer to Tech Founder to Space Explorer

Illustrated Career News portrait of Anousheh Ansari as an engineer, technology entrepreneur, space explorer, and XPRIZE leader

Anousheh Ansari built one of the most extraordinary global careers in technology and exploration: electrical engineer, serial entrepreneur, commercial-space pioneer, International Space Station visitor and CEO of XPRIZE.

Her work is still active in 2026. On August 19, XPRIZE named Ansari as one of the judges for its $2 million Build with Gemini global AI competition. XPRIZE described her as a serial entrepreneur who co-founded and sold two technology companies before becoming the first female private space explorer.

Ansari’s technical career began with electronics and electrical engineering. She earned a bachelor’s degree in electronics and computer engineering from George Mason University and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University. She then helped build technology companies in telecommunications and connected systems, eventually co-founding Prodea Systems.

Ansari discusses innovation prizes, AI, quantum computing, carbon removal and her experience in space.

Her family also helped change commercial spaceflight. They became title sponsors of the $10 million Ansari XPRIZE, the competition won by SpaceShipOne in 2004 after completing the required privately funded reusable spaceflights.

Then Ansari made the transition from supporting spaceflight to experiencing it herself. On September 18, 2006, she launched aboard Soyuz TMA-9 toward the International Space Station. ESA documented her participation in four human-physiology experiments during the mission.

A July 2026 discussion brought renewed attention to Ansari’s place in Iranian and commercial-space history.

The flight made her the first female private space explorer, the first astronaut of Iranian descent and the first Muslim woman in space. She spent roughly 11 days on the expedition and became the fourth private explorer to visit space.

Ansari describes the path from growing up in Iran to entrepreneurship and spaceflight in this TEDx talk.

In 2018, Ansari became CEO of XPRIZE. The organization says that under her leadership it has launched hundreds of millions of dollars in incentive competitions across climate, health, AI and other major technical challenges.

Ansari’s résumé belongs beside Mae Jemison’s path from engineer to doctor to astronaut, Claudie Haigneré’s journey from medicine to spaceflight to government, and Victor Vescovo’s climb from Everest to Challenger Deep to space. Her version connects engineering, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, spaceflight and global innovation leadership in one career.
