Facebook is giving users a more direct way to shape what appears in Feed and Reels. In its October 13 announcement, Meta introduced Your Algorithm, a control that lets people add or manage topics and describe, in their own words, what they want to see more or less often.
Meta says large language models help interpret those written preferences alongside the thousands of signals its ranking systems already use. Recommendations can change within the same session. TechCrunch independently reported that the Facebook rollout follows similar controls on Instagram.
The technical change is important because Facebook is moving beyond pure behavioral inference. Likes, comments and watch time still matter, but freeform text now becomes another ranking signal. That direction echoes BitcoinVersus.Tech’s earlier coverage of Australia pushing for user choice over social-media algorithms.
There are still open questions. Meta did not specify rollout countries, how heavily typed requests are weighted, how long they persist, or whether those preferences affect advertising. So “control” currently means a stronger input into the recommendation system, not ownership of the system itself.
The shift also fits a broader debate over whether social platforms should be built around engagement or user intent, a tension visible in our coverage of Orkut’s proposed return with a more human internet and Bluesky’s growth as an alternative social network.
