Reddit Says New Spam Controls Cut Home Feed Spam 28%

Reddit says a new anti-spam ranking system cut spam exposure in its Home feed by 28% during testing. In a fresh Reddit Safety post, the company said it now reduces the distribution of posts that show strong spam signals while automated systems and moderators continue reviewing them.

Reddit’s Safety team explains the new anti-spam controls and the coordinated network its systems identified.

Reddit also says user reports tied to Home fell 11% and spammy push notifications fell about 7%. Its systems flagged one coordinated network of 485 accounts responsible for more than 44,000 posts and comments since January. About 18,000 appeared in r/AskReddit. Those figures are Reddit’s own measurements, not independently audited results.

The shift matters because social platforms are increasingly combining algorithmic ranking with automated authenticity checks. That same tension between platform control and user control is visible in Facebook’s new Your Algorithm feature, Australia’s push for algorithm choice, and Orkut’s proposed more human social network.

Social Media Today separately reported that Reddit is expanding its defenses against inauthentic and misleading activity ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterms. Reddit says the broader system still combines automated detection, volunteer moderators and user reports rather than relying on AI alone.
