Australia is considering rules that could give social-media users a direct choice over whether recommendation algorithms decide what appears in their feeds.

Under the government’s proposed “My Feed, My Way” approach, platforms would have to tell users about feed options and allow eligible users to opt out of personalized recommendations in favor of content from accounts they follow. The proposal forms part of Australia’s broader Digital Duty of Care approach to online safety.

What Would Actually Change?

Most large social platforms rank content using recommendation systems that evaluate signals such as prior interactions and engagement. Australia’s proposal would not simply ban those systems. It would require a user-choice mechanism, shifting part of the decision over feed design from the platform to the individual.

Why the Proposal Is Politically Contested

The policy has generated debate over platform responsibility, user autonomy, free expression and the reach of national regulation over global technology companies. Those are competing policy positions rather than settled technical facts. The proposal may also change during the legislative process.

An Algorithm Is Also an Editorial System

A following-only feed primarily answers: what did the accounts I selected publish? A recommendation feed answers: what does the platform predict I should see next? Both involve design choices, but the person exercising that choice differs.
