ROHL Gateway Fiber is expanding its long-haul network across Western Canada, adding dark fiber, 400G wavelength services and more physically diverse routes for data centers, carriers and industrial operators.
In its October 13 announcement, ROHL said the expansion builds on its existing network connecting the Edmonton region with Northern Alberta and British Columbia. The company says new routes are intended to improve reach and route diversity across Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan while giving customers more options toward Eastern Canada, the United States, Asia and Europe.
ROHL says its Ciena-based optical platform is engineered to carry multiple 400 Gbps wavelengths on each route, alongside Layer 2 Ethernet transport, point-of-presence connectivity and custom fiber extensions. It also says the network is engineered for 99.999% uptime.
Dark fiber itself is not bandwidth. As the NTIA explains, it is installed but unlit fiber that customers can lease and operate with their own optical equipment. That gives large network operators more control over capacity, routing and upgrades, but also shifts more operational responsibility to them.
The expansion fits a larger networking shift. BitcoinVersus.Tech has recently covered Ciena’s 6.4T AI interconnect work, Lightmatter’s effort to cut AI fiber counts, and tight AI optics supply.
Why it matters: power and land may determine where a data center can be built, but fiber determines how effectively it can connect to the rest of the compute world. In regions attracting new AI infrastructure, redundant high-capacity routes are becoming part of site selection rather than an afterthought.
