Voyant Photonics is moving its silicon-photonics technology into AI data-center networking. The company said October 13 that it plans to develop a chip-scale optical circuit switching engine that networking vendors can integrate into larger switch platforms.
According to Voyant’s announcement, the design adapts a switching architecture already used in its FMCW LiDAR platform. Voyant says the solid-state fabric has no moving parts, can reconfigure in microseconds and has been engineered for trillions of switching cycles.
NextGenInfra explains how silicon-photonic optical circuit switching can reconfigure data-center paths much faster than traditional approaches.
The Open Compute Project now treats OCS as a dedicated networking subproject for AI, machine learning and high-performance computing. Unlike ordinary packet switching, OCS can keep traffic in the optical domain instead of repeatedly converting signals between light and electricity.
The move arrives as optical networking becomes more central to AI infrastructure. BitcoinVersus.Tech has recently covered expanded SiGe capacity for high-speed interconnects, 12.8 Tb/s pluggable optics and 102.4 Tb/s co-packaged-optics switching. Voyant has not disclosed a production date, pricing or customer names for the OCS engine.
