A patch panel is a passive rack-mounted connection point that keeps permanent Ethernet or fiber cabling organized. It does not route traffic, assign IP addresses or forward packets. That is the switch’s job.

Think of the patch panel as the clean handoff between long cable runs and active network equipment. Permanent cable from a wall jack, overhead tray or another rack terminates at the panel. A short patch cord then connects that numbered port to a switch. Fluke Networks describes patch-panel-to-patch-panel cabling as part of the permanent link used in structured cabling.

The advantage is serviceability. If rack port 12 feeds a wall jack labeled A-12, a technician can test, repatch or move that connection without pulling a new cable through the building. Feed-through panels use couplers on both sides; punch-down panels terminate twisted-pair conductors on the rear. Fiber panels perform the same basic organizational role for optical links. Eaton’s 24-port rack panel, for example, occupies 1U and supports standard RJ45 copper cabling.
