Shawn Hillewaert built his career in two worlds that rarely overlap: underground mining and law.
Underground mining ranked among our Top 10 Toughest Jobs in the World in 2026. Hillewaert is a strong Career Journalist subject because he later crossed from that physically demanding work into a licensed profession built around research, argument and courtroom judgment.
His current Harris Law Firm biography says he earned a B.S. in Economics and a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Utah before attending the University of Wyoming College of Law. He is now a Colorado family-law attorney.
Hillewaert appears on camera in a current profile from The Harris Law Firm.
The part that makes his résumé stand out appears in an earlier professional biography from Bachus & Schanker: before entering law school, Hillewaert worked as an underground miner. That same biography also records his later legal work in criminal defense and personal injury.
Mining and litigation demand very different forms of discipline. Underground work requires physical endurance, hazard awareness and trust in the people around you. Legal practice requires years of formal education, bar admission, careful research and the ability to make decisions with someone else’s future at stake.
That crossover puts Hillewaert beside air-traffic-controller-turned-attorney Vanessa Aaron and smokejumper-turned-dentist Robert Rosenthal: people who mastered one demanding profession, then built a second career requiring an entirely different credential set.
Hillewaert’s career is a reminder that a résumé does not have to move in a straight line. Experience from a difficult physical job can become the foundation for a profession that depends on judgment, communication and years of academic training.
