Charles Schwab has moved from talking about direct cryptocurrency access to offering it. Schwab Crypto is now available to eligible clients, allowing direct purchases and sales of Bitcoin and Ethereum through Schwab.com, Schwab Mobile and thinkorswim.
The change matters because Schwab clients previously had several ways to gain crypto exposure without directly owning the assets, including exchange-traded products, stocks, funds, futures and options. Schwab’s current crypto trading page now explicitly says Bitcoin and Ethereum can be bought and sold directly through a dedicated Schwab Crypto account.
The WatcherGuru post highlighting the rollout captures the broader market reaction: one of the largest U.S. brokerage platforms has opened direct access to the two largest cryptocurrencies by market value.
From Announcement to Availability
Schwab first detailed the product in an April 16 announcement, when it described a phased rollout of direct Bitcoin and Ethereum trading. The key October development is that Schwab’s own consumer pages now present the service as available rather than merely planned.
That progression follows signals Schwab had been sending for more than a year. BitcoinVersus.Tech previously covered a Schwab shift toward direct cryptocurrency trading and a survey showing strong client interest in Bitcoin and crypto ETFs. The move also arrives as large financial firms continue expanding digital-asset products, including the recent growth in BlackRock digital-asset ETP flows.
How Schwab Crypto Works
The crypto account is separate from a standard Schwab brokerage account but linked to it inside the same platform. Schwab charges 0.75% of the trade value for each crypto buy or sell, with a $0.01 minimum fee and no added spread. Eligible users can trade through Schwab.com, Schwab Mobile or thinkorswim.
Availability is not universal. Schwab says the account is currently limited to eligible clients in supported U.S. jurisdictions and is not available to residents of New York or Louisiana, residents of U.S. territories or international clients. Applications are also subject to review and approval.
The distinction between the brokerage account and the crypto account is also important for risk. Schwab states that cryptocurrencies are highly volatile, are not deposits and are not protected by FDIC or SIPC insurance. Direct ownership therefore gives clients a different exposure than a Bitcoin or Ethereum exchange-traded product.
The larger story is the normalization of direct crypto access inside traditional finance. Schwab is no longer only offering products tied to Bitcoin and Ethereum prices; eligible clients can now hold and trade the underlying assets through the same broader ecosystem they use for conventional investments.
