Aehr Test Systems appointed former Meta infrastructure executive Vijay Rao to its board of directors, effective October 28, 2026, bringing hyperscale data center expertise to a semiconductor equipment supplier expanding its work in AI processors and optical networking.

The Fremont, California-based company announced the appointment on October 29. Rao spent more than 13 years at Meta and most recently served as vice president of infrastructure. Aehr said his experience includes AI computing, semiconductor technologies and the infrastructure strategy behind large data center deployments.

Aehr specializes in wafer-level and packaged-device testing, including burn-in processes that expose early failures before semiconductors are deployed in costly computing systems. Its products serve AI accelerators, silicon photonics, power electronics and other chips where reliability matters.

Why the appointment matters for AI hardware

Large AI clusters combine accelerators, high-bandwidth memory and fast optical connections. A faulty component can interrupt an expensive installation, making reliability screening an important step between chip manufacturing and data center deployment. Rao’s experience operating infrastructure at Meta gives Aehr a perspective from the customer side of that process.

The company has already reported follow-on orders for FOX-XP systems used to test silicon photonics chips. An August order included automated wafer handling and test blades capable of delivering up to 3,500 watts per wafer. Those specifications describe the equipment’s testing capability, not the electrical consumption of finished optical chips.

The board appointment does not establish a new Meta purchase order, supply contract or partnership with Aehr. The company has not announced any such transaction in connection with Rao’s appointment. Its potential commercial benefit is access to experience in deploying and maintaining large-scale AI systems.

For data center operators, the broader trend is familiar: as optical networking speeds increase and AI hardware becomes denser, component qualification and manufacturing yield matter alongside raw compute performance. Earlier BitcoinVersus.Tech reporting also examined advanced AI-chip cooling as another reliability challenge.

Aehr has not quantified how the appointment will affect sales or future earnings. Investors and customers will have to judge the practical results through subsequent orders, product performance and disclosed financial results.
