Altera Unveils Agilex 27 FPGA, Claims 1.8× Better Performance per Watt

Altera introduced its Agilex 2X programmable-chip portfolio on October 28, 2026, led by the new Agilex 27 FPGA. The company claims the flagship architecture delivers 1.8 times the performance per watt of its previous-generation Agilex 7 while supporting faster networking for AI data centers, telecommunications and aerospace systems. Engineering samples, however, are not expected until the second half of 2027.

An FPGA, or field-programmable gate array, is a chip whose logic can be reconfigured after manufacturing. Unlike a fixed-function processor, it allows engineers to customize hardware for packet processing, real-time signal handling and other specialized workloads. Agilex 27 is designed for situations where high throughput and predictable latency matter as much as raw processing speed.

Inside the new programmable architecture

The new Agilex 27 platform combines third-generation HyperFlex programmable logic with a distributed HyperFlow network inside the chip. Altera says HyperFlow moves data at multi-terabit rates without occupying general-purpose programmable logic. Its connectivity roadmap includes 800-gigabit and 1.6-terabit Ethernet, transceivers reaching 256 Gbps, and support for PCIe 6.0 and 7.0.

Altera CEO Raghib Hussain discusses FPGAs, AI factories and physical AI in a June 2026 theCUBE/NYSE Wired interview, included in SiliconANGLE’s Agilex 2X coverage. The interview predates Agilex 27. Watch directly on YouTube if embedded playback is unavailable.

That matters because AI networking infrastructure increasingly depends on moving information efficiently between processors, memory and switches. A specialized programmable chip may handle traffic or security functions without forcing general-purpose servers to do all the work. Our network fabric guide explains why communication capacity can constrain an otherwise powerful compute cluster.

Four families and a longer hardware timeline

Altera is also expanding beyond the flagship. Agilex 25 targets video, sensors and drones; Agilex 23 emphasizes robotics and industrial control; Agilex 22 focuses on compact, I/O-heavy applications. All four families will share the Quartus Prime design environment and QuartusIQ, the company’s newly available AI-assisted engineering companion.

The 1.8× figure is a manufacturer performance-per-watt claim, not an independent benchmark or proof of equivalent savings across every application. The distinction is important for compute-per-joule comparisons: useful throughput, workload type and measurement conditions determine how meaningful any efficiency number becomes.

QuartusIQ is already available through Quartus Prime 26.3, with Agilex 27 software early access scheduled for mid-November 2026. Actual Agilex 27 engineering silicon is projected for late 2027. For equipment makers, the next milestone is measured performance on real devices, rather than theoretical capabilities in a product announcement.
