Elon Musk’s growing AI infrastructure strategy is moving deeper into semiconductor manufacturing with TeraFab, a massive vertically integrated chip production project being developed by Tesla, SpaceX and xAI.
The companies recently confirmed plans for a major TeraFab site in Grimes County, Texas, with an initial investment of roughly $16.8 billion.
Rather than operating as a conventional AI data center, TeraFab is designed as an advanced semiconductor manufacturing complex capable of bringing logic chips, memory, advanced packaging and testing together under one industrial platform.
The project reflects Musk’s argument that future artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, robotics and space-based computing will require far more semiconductor capacity than existing suppliers can provide.
Tesla needs increasingly powerful silicon for autonomous driving and its Optimus humanoid robotics platform, while SpaceX and xAI are pursuing increasingly compute-intensive AI infrastructure.
TeraFab is intended to reduce dependence on fragmented external semiconductor supply chains by vertically integrating more of the chip manufacturing process.
Tesla job postings already describe the project as a semiconductor factory incorporating logic, memory, packaging and testing at unprecedented scale.
Musk’s long-term vision is significantly larger than the initial Texas facility.
TeraFab has been presented as part of a strategy ultimately targeting roughly one terawatt of annual computing capacity, although achieving that scale would require enormous capital investment, manufacturing equipment, energy infrastructure and semiconductor expertise.
The project therefore represents more than another Tesla factory: it is an attempt to build a vertically integrated AI hardware supply chain capable of supporting vehicles, robots, AI models and future SpaceX computing systems.
If successful, TeraFab could place Musk’s companies much deeper into the global semiconductor industry alongside the specialized foundries and equipment manufacturers that currently form the backbone of advanced computing.
