Enphase Energy said October 27 that its IQ solid-state transformer successfully converted 13.8 kilovolts of alternating current to 800 volts of direct current at a research laboratory in Austin, Texas. The test marks a system-level advance toward power equipment designed to feed high-density AI computing racks.
The demonstration connected 132 power modules, arranged as 44 modules in series on each of three electrical phases. According to Enphase, the modules maintained a stable 800 V DC output during rapid load changes intended to simulate the shifting demands of AI accelerators.

What the electrical test established
Traditional data centers often use multiple stages to step down and convert incoming utility power before it reaches servers. Enphase is developing a more direct conversion approach that could reduce equipment, electrical losses and floor-space requirements. Those potential benefits have not yet been independently demonstrated at commercial data-center scale.
Each tested module is rated at 5.5 kilowatts and incorporates gallium nitride switching, Enphase’s Kestrel control ASIC and a high-frequency isolation transformer. Distributed controls are intended to balance voltage across the modules, with redundancy designed to tolerate individual module failures.
The October results are separate from Enphase’s earlier Infineon GaN switch announcement and its September power-module manufacturing update. The newly reported achievement is coordinated medium-voltage conversion under simulated fluctuating loads.
Enphase plans to extend testing to 34.5 kV, with megawatt-scale full-rack demonstrations targeted before the end of 2026 and customer pilots expected in 2027. Those dates remain company plans; the October laboratory test does not establish production readiness.

The work arrives as AI operators assess higher-voltage distribution for increasingly power-hungry racks. Competing developments include Vantage’s agreement with Heron Power, while the industry continues debating 54 V versus 800 V rack architectures.
The next meaningful evidence will be certified efficiency, fault-handling results and long-duration tests at megawatt scale. Until then, Enphase’s announcement establishes a laboratory milestone, not a measured reduction in an operating data center’s energy bill.
