The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is set to receive more than 200 digital artworks from collectors over the next several years, bringing early computer-generated art, blockchain-based pieces and contemporary AI art into a major museum collection. Announced October 22, the gift includes work by Refik Anadol and other prominent digital artists. One contribution also turns a foundational piece of technology into a cultural artifact: paintings of Bitcoin’s original computer code.

The works are being offered through LACMA Digital Leaders and other donors, including the Mneme Foundation. The museum has not said that all 200-plus pieces have already been transferred or placed on exhibition. The project follows earlier museum efforts to collect, preserve and display artworks created through software and digital networks.

Bitcoin source code becomes a museum artwork

Artist Robert Alice said his Portraits of a Mind series is represented in the gift. The project divides the source code behind Bitcoin’s first release across 40 circular paintings, each containing 322,048 hexadecimal characters. One painting from the series is expected to join LACMA, although the museum has not publicly identified which numbered painting it will receive.

The paintings echo cryptographic diagrams and ancient coinage while preserving a fragment of software history on a physical surface. That connection gives a cultural dimension to the early history of Bitcoin beyond its use as a financial network.

From algorithmic installations to AI-generated work

The donation program also includes pieces by artists such as Casey Reas, Harold Cohen, Vera Molnár and Refik Anadol. Their methods span rule-based computer drawing, interactive software and modern machine-learning systems. The distinctions matter: not every digital artwork relies on generative AI or a blockchain.

Dezeen’s 2017 footage of Refik Anadol’s immersive Infinity installation demonstrates one form of algorithm-driven art. It is archival context, not documentation of the new LACMA donation.

For example, Anadol’s Infinity Room uses coordinated projections and mirrored surfaces to turn software-generated patterns into a walk-in environment. His earlier installations help illustrate why museums must think beyond storing an ordinary static image when caring for digital art.

In a 2016 Day for Night interview, Refik Anadol discusses Infinity Room and the ideas behind immersive digital installations.

The expansion also raises long-term questions about preserving obsolete software, maintaining access to interactive works and documenting the role of human authorship in AI-assisted creation. Those questions sit alongside continuing debates about authenticity and disclosure in computer-generated images.

LACMA says the art will arrive over a period of years. Its next test will be how it catalogs, conserves and ultimately presents that history to museum visitors, rather than how many files it can acquire.
