Apple unveiled a new 24-inch M6 iMac in Cupertino on October 27, bringing higher CPU and GPU core counts, Wi-Fi 7, faster storage and expanded on-device AI capabilities to its all-in-one desktop. Preorders opened October 28, with retail availability scheduled for November 6. U.S. prices start at $1,499.
The entry configuration combines a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU. A $1,699 version increases both to 12 cores, adds four Thunderbolt 4 ports and supports optional 2.5-gigabit Ethernet. Both retain the familiar 24-inch 4.5K Retina display and seven-color chassis, rather than introducing a larger screen.

More Computing Power, With Important Benchmarks
Apple says the M6 offers up to twice the graphics performance of its M4 iMac on specified tasks and up to five times the on-device AI prompt-processing performance in LM Studio. Those figures come from Apple’s own tests and represent particular workloads, not a blanket fivefold increase in everyday computing speed. Memory bandwidth reaches up to 170 GB/s.
The upgraded desktop also supports a different end of Apple’s desktop lineup, where Mac Studio targets much heavier professional workloads and expandable memory configurations. The new iMac instead prioritizes an integrated display and compact installation.
AppleInsider examines the M6 iMac’s processor, wireless connectivity, SSD and Ethernet upgrades in its October 27 video.
AppleInsider’s launch-day breakdown also highlights a continuing limitation: Apple has not revived a 27-inch iMac. Customers requiring more display space must use an external monitor or a different Mac. The video discusses announced specifications rather than independent hands-on performance measurements.
Connectivity and AI Take Center Stage
Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 upgrade the wireless connections, while Apple claims SSD reads and writes can be twice as fast as the outgoing M4 version. The 12-core model’s four Thunderbolt 4 ports support accessories and up to two external 6K displays. These are configuration-dependent capabilities.

Running macOS 27, the desktop also supports Siri AI, which Apple says can answer questions about personal information and perform tasks across apps. Some capabilities are in beta, language-limited or usage-limited; users should not assume all announced features work everywhere on launch day.

Buyers coming from Intel-era iMacs get a faster chip and modern connectivity. Owners of recent M4 iMacs should wait for independent benchmarks, while those needing a larger screen must use an external monitor or consider another Mac.
