Foxconn Chairman Young Liu said Friday, October 30, that the electronics manufacturer is discussing an expanded collaboration with OpenAI following a meeting with CEO Sam Altman in Taipei. Liu, speaking during the company’s annual Hon Hai Tech Day, said an announcement would come after the details are settled.
The proposed agreement is not yet final. Foxconn has not disclosed the new arrangement’s financial terms, supply commitments or timetable, and OpenAI has not announced a separate agreement arising from Friday’s meeting.
Foxconn held its technology showcase at the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center, where its leadership outlined plans for AI infrastructure manufacturing and next-generation computing systems. The October 30 opening program was livestreamed by the company.
The talks follow a November 2025 agreement to jointly design and engineer AI data center racks and related infrastructure. The companies identified U.S. production of cabling, networking, cooling and power equipment as a priority. The original agreement did not include a firm purchase commitment from OpenAI.
The original agreement gave OpenAI early access to evaluate Foxconn hardware, with an option to buy equipment, but no binding purchase obligation. The two reports embedded above were published in November 2025 and provide background on that agreement; the new talks were disclosed on October 30, 2026.
AI servers have become increasingly important to Foxconn’s business. Its cloud and networking products, a segment that includes AI servers, represented 51% of second-quarter 2026 revenue, according to the company’s August results cited by Reuters.
Liu also said Foxconn operates six factory buildings in Houston, Texas, producing AI servers for NVIDIA, and sees room for additional expansion. In a separate Bloomberg interview, he described AI infrastructure demand as strong and the OpenAI partnership as strategically important.
Why it matters: More cooperation could give OpenAI access to a larger U.S. manufacturing ecosystem while giving Foxconn another major customer for advanced AI infrastructure. The next milestone is a formal announcement explaining which hardware will be built, where it will be produced and whether binding orders are involved.
