The rehabilitation trustee for collapsed Bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox has pushed three creditor-repayment deadlines forward one year, from October 31, 2026, to October 31, 2027, Japan Standard Time. Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi announced the court-authorized change on October 16, 2026, in a two-page official notice published on MtGox.com. The extension covers base repayment, early lump-sum repayment and intermediate repayment.
Mt. Gox was once among the world’s largest Bitcoin exchanges before collapsing in 2014. Its civil rehabilitation process distributes recoverable assets to approved creditors under a court-supervised plan. The new date is a deadline for completing eligible distributions, not a promise that every claimant will receive funds on October 31, 2027—or that all remaining transfers must wait until then.

Unfinished paperwork and payment problems drive the delay
The trustee says the major repayment categories are largely complete for creditors who submitted the required documentation and experienced no processing problems, with some payment types excepted. However, many creditors have not completed the necessary procedures, while others encountered administrative or payment-processing obstacles. The trustee requested additional time to address eligible outstanding claims wherever reasonably practicable.
The notice does not provide a verified current Bitcoin balance, a newly scheduled Bitcoin transfer, or individual payment dates. Estimates of estate wallet holdings circulating in market reporting should not be confused with trustee-certified assets or coins available for immediate distribution. BitcoinVersus.Tech previously covered a $2.2 billion Mt. Gox-linked Bitcoin movement in 2024; a historical transfer cannot establish a fresh sale in November 2026.

The fourth consecutive annual deadline extension
The creditor timetable has now moved annually from October 2023 to October 2024, October 2025, October 2026 and October 2027. Earlier BitcoinVersus.Tech coverage of a prior repayment extension documented an earlier stage in the rehabilitation. The October 16 notice is a material new procedural decision, not a restatement of that earlier deadline.
Distributions have used intermediaries to transfer Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash or fiat currency to eligible creditors, subject to their selected repayment methods. Receipt of coins does not automatically mean immediate selling: creditors can retain, transfer or dispose of assets under their own circumstances. Bitcoin’s unspent-transaction-output model makes onchain movement observable, but wallet transfers alone cannot prove their economic purpose.
Creditors face another year of uncertainty
For creditors, the extension supplies time to resolve documentation and payment issues but prolongs uncertainty about the remaining distributions. It also leaves room for impersonation scams. The trustee’s official site explicitly warns against fraudulent websites and emails seeking personal details. Creditors should use the authenticated claims portal and its official inquiry channel instead of following links in unsolicited messages.

The bankruptcy remains a reminder that centralized exchange claims differ from coins secured directly by users’ private keys. Holding assets through an intermediary can introduce legal, custodial and operational dependencies. BitcoinVersus.Tech also reported on the former Mt. Gox CEO’s later exchange venture, a separate business unrelated to the trustee’s payment timetable.
For Bitcoin markets, the extension alone establishes neither a wave of sales nor a guaranteed supply shock. The relevant evidence will be future trustee statements, actual wallet movements and documented creditor distributions. The court-approved date is now October 31, 2027; the amount and timing of remaining payouts are still unresolved.
Editor’s Note: Primary evidence: Mt. Gox trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi’s October 16, 2026 English-language notice and the official MtGox.com announcements page. Secondary context was cross-checked against Blockhead’s October 20 coverage. The deadline moves from October 31, 2026 to October 31, 2027, Japan Standard Time. No new onchain transfer, sale or current trustee-certified BTC balance was established by the notice. The official logo is public-domain Wikimedia text-logo media; the historical Tokyo office and 2014 protest photographs are archival third-party editorial images credited to their publishers, not images of the 2026 event. No YouTube video was embedded without title, channel, availability and playback checks. Independent mobile and desktop visual testing remain outstanding.
