xAI is building toward nearly 2 gigawatts of AI computing power across its Greater Memphis and Southaven infrastructure, turning the Tennessee-Mississippi state line into one of the world’s largest concentrated AI compute projects.

Mississippi announced more than $20 billion of xAI investment in Southaven in January. The company’s MACROHARDRR data center is part of a broader cluster that xAI says will push its Colossus training infrastructure toward roughly 2 GW.

Power is becoming the defining engineering problem. Mississippi regulators approved permanent generation capable of supplying approximately 1.2 GW, while xAI says temporary mobile turbines are being removed as the permanent power plant comes online.

At this scale, AI infrastructure begins to resemble the largest Bitcoin mining campuses: substations, generation, cooling, high-density computing equipment and enormous electrical interconnections become as important as the chips themselves.

The development follows the same infrastructure trend BitcoinVersus.tech highlighted in Alibaba’s 20 GW data-center target. The next phase of AI competition is increasingly being measured in megawatts and gigawatts.
