Sterling Digital Mines First Bitcoin From West Texas Gas

Sterling Digital has crossed the line from building a Bitcoin mining site to actually producing Bitcoin. The UK-listed miner recorded its first verified BTC during live commissioning of an off-grid natural-gas-powered facility in West Texas, validating the complete chain from fuel supply to electricity, ASIC computation and institutional custody.

The September 2 regulatory update gives an unusually detailed look at a small industrial mining deployment. Sterling says two 2 MW Caterpillar natural-gas generators are delivering about 1.6 MW of net power each to a fleet of 420 ASIC mining servers. Once fully commissioned, the fleet is expected to provide approximately 193,500 TH/s, or 193.5 PH/s, of SHA-256 computing capacity.

Natural gas goes directly into Bitcoin production

Sterling’s model avoids relying entirely on a conventional grid connection. The company buys underutilized natural gas from the WAHA pipeline in West Texas and converts it into electricity at the mining site. During the controlled live-load test, that generation system successfully powered the ASIC fleet and produced Bitcoin that was deposited into Sterling’s Coinbase custody account.

The company says the commissioning data is now being used to optimize power generation, electrical distribution, controls and mining hardware before continuous commercial operation begins.

420 ASICs are only the first phase

The current deployment is relatively compact compared with hyperscale mining campuses, but its energy agreement is much larger than the initial fleet. Sterling has a five-year gas purchase agreement covering up to 6,500 MMBtu of natural gas per day in Martin County, Texas. The company says that supply could support as much as 25 MW of computing capacity.

That leaves substantial headroom beyond the approximately 3.2 MW of combined net output Sterling currently reports from its two generators. The company has said it intends to expand into nearby regions and secure additional agreements with stranded-gas asset providers after proving the initial model.

The power plant is part of the mining machine

For this type of operation, the ASIC is only one part of the system. Gas regulation, generators, cooling and lubrication, switchgear, electrical protection, distribution, mining containers, controls and networking all have to operate together. Sterling’s commissioning milestone matters because the entire stack produced a verifiable end result rather than simply demonstrating that individual generators or miners could turn on.

The approach also changes the economics miners watch. Instead of buying every kilowatt-hour from the grid, Sterling’s production cost depends heavily on WAHA natural-gas pricing, generator efficiency, uptime, maintenance and the efficiency of its ASIC fleet.

Bitcoin treasury starts at the mine

Sterling says Bitcoin that is not needed for operating costs or new site development can be retained under its Bitcoin Treasury Reserve Policy. That creates a vertically integrated model in which the company acquires part of its Bitcoin treasury through its own energy and compute infrastructure rather than buying all of it at market prices.

What comes next

The next meaningful milestone is continuous commercial production. Commissioning proves that the system can work end to end, but it does not establish long-term uptime, realized Bitcoin production, operating cost or fleet profitability. Those numbers will become clearer after Sterling moves from controlled live-load testing into sustained operation.

For Bitcoin mining infrastructure, however, the project is worth tracking because it packages the power plant, electrical system and ASIC fleet into one on-site industrial system and has now produced its first verified Bitcoin.
