Every major internet platform eventually discovers the same second business: attention becomes inventory. Search did it. Social media did it. Streaming did it. The next version is beginning to form around AI.
The important finding is that this is no longer just a theory. Public evidence does not show a disclosed nine-figure or multibillion-dollar exclusive deal for a single logo or trademark placement inside an AI browser. But the commercial machinery that would support those deals is already being built, tested and monetized.
The Second Profit Wave Is Already Here
OpenAI began testing ChatGPT advertising in early 2026. By August, the company said ChatGPT Ads had reached a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate and was being used by tens of thousands of advertisers. That is not a prototype-scale signal. It is the beginning of an advertising market attached to a conversational interface.
OpenAI’s original X announcement that ads were coming to ChatGPT framed the model around clearly labeled sponsored placements kept separate from the assistant’s answers. Since then, the product has moved quickly from simple sponsored placement toward something more native to AI.
The Ad Slot Is Turning Into a Conversation
The biggest change is that an AI ad does not have to behave like a banner. In OpenAI’s September 16 advertising update, the company said it was testing Sponsored Agents with selected U.S. advertisers. A user can click an ad and open a separate conversation with an AI representative of the business, ask follow-up questions and then move to the advertiser’s site.
OpenAI also announced integrations with Shopify and HubSpot, plus AI tools for creating, translating and adjusting ad copy. In other words, the deals already in place are not yet giant one-off logo sponsorships. They are more structurally important: commerce, CRM, agency and advertiser infrastructure is being wired directly into the AI platform.
BitcoinVersus.Tech covered the newest step today when ChatGPT began moving visual advertising beside image-generation workflows. That turns the ad market from a text box below an answer into a format that can appear close to a user’s creative or shopping intent.
Google Is Building the Same Kind of AI-Native Ad Layer
This is not only an OpenAI story. Google’s AI-era Search advertising announcement describes conversational discovery ads, highlighted answers and AI-powered shopping formats built with Gemini. The direction is clear: when users stop typing short keywords and instead describe what they actually want, the advertising system gains richer intent.
That changes the economics. Traditional search advertising auctions a keyword. AI advertising can potentially auction access to a much more detailed decision: budget, preferences, timing, constraints and desired outcome, all expressed in natural language.
There Is No Public $10 Billion Logo Deal — Yet
A search of currently public announcements does not show a major AI platform disclosing a deal where one brand paid hundreds of millions or tens of billions of dollars simply to place its trademark inside a prompt browser. That specific stage of the market still appears ahead of us.
But the absence of a blockbuster exclusive sponsorship should not be confused with an absence of deals. OpenAI already has advertisers, buying tools, agency partners, measurement systems, commerce integrations and sponsored AI agents. Google is putting sponsored experiences inside AI-driven search. The infrastructure is being normalized before the biggest checks arrive.
Why Prompt Browsers Could Become More Valuable Than Search Ads
Search engines usually know the query. An AI assistant can know the entire decision process inside the current conversation: what the user rejected, what tradeoffs matter, what price is acceptable and what outcome they are trying to reach. That makes a relevant commercial placement potentially more valuable than a generic impression.
The scale is already large enough to matter. BitcoinVersus.Tech previously tracked ChatGPT passing 1 billion active users. A platform with that audience does not need every user to click an ad to build a very large advertising business.
The next step gets even more interesting when the assistant becomes an agent. BitcoinVersus.Tech has also covered OpenAI’s Dots and the move toward always-on AI agents. Once software is researching, comparing and acting for people, the commercial battlefield may shift from “which ad did a human see?” to “which offer did an agent consider, verify or transact against?”
The Real Second Wave of AI Profit
The first AI profit wave is subscriptions, API usage and enterprise software. The second can be advertising, commerce and paid access to decision moments. What makes the AI version different is that the placement can become interactive: an ad can answer questions, configure an offer, compare products and potentially hand the user directly into a transaction.
That is why the most important development is not whether a giant brand has already written a $10 billion check for a logo. It is that the auction house is being built. The interfaces, advertiser tools, integrations and sponsored-agent formats are already here. If AI becomes the new browser layer of the internet, advertising is positioned to become one of its largest profit engines.
