Field-Programmable Gate Array

A Field-Programmable Gate Array, or FPGA, is a semiconductor device that can be configured after manufacturing to perform custom digital logic functions. Unlike a traditional CPU, which executes software instructions sequentially, an FPGA contains programmable logic blocks, routing resources, memory elements, and digital signal-processing components that can be arranged into specialized hardware circuits.

Engineers commonly program FPGAs using hardware description languages such as VHDL and Verilog, allowing the chip to behave like custom-built digital hardware without requiring a new ASIC to be manufactured.

FPGAs are widely used in embedded systems, telecommunications, data centers, aerospace, automotive electronics, industrial automation, robotics, networking, artificial intelligence, and signal processing.

Because multiple FPGA circuits can operate in parallel, the devices are especially useful for applications requiring deterministic timing, low latency, fast data processing, or direct hardware control.

Common examples include network packet processing, motor control, sensor interfaces, radar systems, image processing, encryption, high-speed communications, and hardware acceleration.

One of the biggest advantages of FPGA technology is reconfigurability. Engineers can modify the digital architecture of an FPGA after deployment, update functionality through new bitstreams, and prototype hardware designs before committing to an ASIC.

Modern FPGA platforms can also integrate processors, memory controllers, high-speed transceivers, DSP blocks, and specialized accelerators into a single system-on-chip architecture. This combination of programmable hardware, parallel processing, and embedded control makes FPGAs an important bridge between software development and custom semiconductor design.
