Computer Programming: The ‘SaaSpocalypse’ Fizzles as Software Stocks Hit 2026 Highs

Enterprise software engineering workstation representing the rebound in software stocks as AI becomes an embedded business tool.

The feared AI-driven “SaaSpocalypse” has not arrived nearly as fast as Wall Street expected. U.S. software stocks climbed to fresh 2026 highs on October 6 as stronger earnings and real enterprise AI sales replaced some of the fear that coding agents would simply wipe out traditional software vendors.

Reuters reported that the S&P 500 software and services index rose 1.3% Tuesday to its highest level since November 2025. Expected 2026 earnings growth for the sector has climbed to 20.6%, up from 13.8% at the end of March.

AI Is Becoming Something Software Companies Sell

Salesforce is a clear example. Its latest quarterly results show Agentforce and Data 360 annual recurring revenue at nearly $3.9 billion, up more than 210% year over year. Instead of AI replacing the software platform, Salesforce is embedding agents directly inside it.

Salesforce’s official Dreamforce 2026 keynote shows how the company is turning AI agents into a core enterprise-software product.

The Coding Threat Is Still Real

The risk has not disappeared. BitcoinVersus.Tech has covered how Kiro Workflows turns multi-agent coding into reusable pipelines, how GitHub used AI agents while rewriting Copilot’s runtime in Rust, and how ReviewBench tests AI code reviewers against real bugs.

The difference is timing. AI coding is improving quickly, but enterprise software vendors are also learning how to package that capability, charge for it, and protect their existing workflows. For now, the “AI replaces SaaS” story is turning into something more complicated: AI may disrupt software, but it can also make software more valuable.
