The Open Compute Project is evaluating whether high-temperature superconductors could become part of future AI data-center power systems as rack and facility loads move into the multi-megawatt range.
OCP’s High-Temperature Superconducting Power Infrastructure workstream is holding an October 13 workshop at the 2026 OCP Global Summit. It is studying grid-to-rack integration, cryogenics, redundancy, fault behavior, protection, fire safety, standards, and how HTS compares with copper and aluminum.
A hardware community discussion shows the skepticism and engineering questions around using high-temperature superconductors for AI data-center power.
OCP’s April 2026 presentation examined superconducting distribution for multi-megawatt AI data halls.
At OCP’s April Future Technologies Symposium, the Rittal and Vision Electric paper “Meeting AI Power Density at Scale: Superconducting Distribution for Multi-MW Data Halls” won Best Overall Paper. OCP’s symposium archive also lists a sustainability presentation on reducing material intensity and lifecycle emissions with superconducting distribution.
A separate community discussion asks whether cryogenic superconducting power lines can be practical for hyperscale data centers, highlighting the economics question OCP’s workstream is trying to answer.
A second OCP symposium presentation examined superconducting power distribution as a way to reduce material intensity and lifecycle emissions in AI data centers.
This work sits beside OCP’s broader push toward denser electrical infrastructure. BitcoinVersus.Tech has recently covered OCP’s path beyond 1 MW racks, Rittal and Bosch’s 800 V AI-rack work, and Delta’s 800 VDC and 3 MW cooling systems.
The key point is that OCP is still evaluating where HTS makes technical and economic sense. This is not evidence that superconducting distribution is ready to replace conventional data-center power systems today. The workstream’s stated goal is to identify viable use cases, candidate architectures and a path toward validation and standardization.
