OCP Says AI Racks Are Headed Past 1 MW

The Open Compute Project says AI data-center power density is now on a path to reach and eventually exceed 1 MW in a single rack, pushing the industry toward new power, cooling and grid designs.

In an October 12 update published as the 2026 OCP Global Summit opened in San Jose, the foundation said its community has established a “clear path” to 1 MW racks while developing standards that extend from the chip to the utility grid. OCP’s roadmap includes 800 VDC distribution today and an eventual evolution toward 1,500 VDC, alongside solid-state transformers, energy-storage guidance and specifications for how hyperscale facilities should ride through grid disturbances.

Schneider Electric explains the 1 MW rack and 800 VDC power-distribution problem at OCP EMEA 2026.

The direction is already visible in hardware. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered LITEON’s 1 MW 800 V power rack, Delta’s 800 VDC and 3 MW cooling systems, and Rittal and Bosch’s 800 V AI-rack power work. Those systems show how rack power, liquid cooling and facility electrical design are increasingly being engineered as one system rather than separate layers.

OCP’s Project Deschutes work is one example of the open liquid-cooling infrastructure being developed for increasingly dense AI systems.

OCP also cited a new IDC impact study forecasting that more than $890 billion of IT equipment based on OCP-recognized designs could change hands in 2030, with OCP penetration exceeding 50% of the applicable market. That is a forecast, not booked revenue, and the 1 MW figure is a technology roadmap rather than a claim that typical racks operate at that level today.

A separate OCP summit overview shows how central the issue has become: its Rack & Power track specifically covers 800 VDC, direct-to-server power, 1 MW+ racks, HVDC grounding, backup technologies and AI power-oscillation filtering.

The larger shift is architectural. As rack density climbs, power conversion, cooling, networking, physical rack design and grid interaction increasingly have to be co-designed. OCP’s newest roadmap suggests the industry is moving from optimizing individual servers toward engineering the entire data center as one connected electrical and thermal system.
