ByteDance is reportedly close to an agreement to buy MediaTek semiconductors for data-center use. Reuters reported on October 15, citing Bloomberg News, that the companies are nearing a supply deal. Reuters said it had not independently confirmed the agreement, so the transaction should still be treated as reported rather than final.
The potential deal matters because MediaTek has been expanding beyond consumer processors into custom AI infrastructure. That shift fits the broader move toward open networks that can connect multiple classes of AI accelerators instead of assuming one chip architecture will dominate every workload.
MediaTek says its data-center business now spans custom ASIC design, advanced packaging, memory, high-speed interconnects and rack integration. The company said in June that it had raised its 2026 AI Data Center ASIC revenue guidance to $2 billion and saw a $70 billion to $80 billion addressable market by 2027.
MediaTek explains how it approaches custom AI data-center silicon from the chip through rack-level systems.
If the reported ByteDance deal closes, it would give MediaTek another path into hyperscale infrastructure while adding another supplier option for a large AI operator. The market is already producing specialized designs such as SEMIFIVE’s custom accelerator work and alternative compute architectures such as Efficient Computer’s dataflow processors.
The key fact remains the status of the agreement: a deal has been reported, but neither company had publicly announced a completed transaction in the sources reviewed for this story.
