ByteDance Nears MediaTek Data Center Chip Deal

Wordless technical illustration of custom AI silicon feeding dense data center racks.

ByteDance is reportedly close to an agreement to buy data-center semiconductors from MediaTek, but the transaction should still be treated as unconfirmed. Reuters reported on October 15 that Bloomberg cited people familiar with the talks; Reuters said it could not independently verify the report.

What is confirmed is MediaTek’s push into custom AI infrastructure. The company’s data-center portfolio describes custom ASIC and XPU development spanning compute dies, HBM interfaces, high-speed I/O, advanced packaging and rack-level integration. That puts MediaTek in the same broader shift toward workload-specific silicon covered in BitcoinVersus.Tech’s Top 7 AI Chips in 2026.

MediaTek explains its custom-ASIC approach for AI data centers, including silicon, packaging, interconnect and rack-level optimization.

If a supply agreement is finalized, the important technical angle would be diversification of AI compute beyond merchant accelerators. Custom silicon can be tuned around a specific model mix, memory hierarchy and power envelope, an increasingly important consideration as AI racks become denser systems rather than collections of independent servers.

The report also arrives as memory and packaging increasingly constrain AI-system design. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered CXMT’s server-DRAM scaling push, another example of infrastructure competition moving below the software layer. For now, however, there is no announced ByteDance–MediaTek contract, disclosed volume or confirmed delivery schedule. The story is a negotiation report, not a completed chip deal.
