What are the world’s oldest schools still teaching? This historical countdown compares seven surviving school lineages, from medieval England to Han-dynasty China. It ranks traditional founding dates, not uninterrupted legal operation: records, closures and refoundings make an absolute global ranking impossible. Schools existed much earlier, including educational traditions behind ancient engineering. Universities are excluded.

#7 Beverley Grammar School — c. 700 AD
Beverley Grammar School traces its origin to about AD 700 and Saint John of Beverley. Its modern Yorkshire institution is frequently called England’s oldest state school, although the historical continuity behind that claim is debated.

#6 Royal Grammar School Worcester — c. 685 AD
Royal Grammar School Worcester dates its foundation to Bishop Bosel around AD 685. The school’s own history distinguishes this tradition from written references in 1265 and definitive separate-school records in 1291.

#5 Hereford Cathedral School — c. 676 AD
Hereford Cathedral School associates its origins with AD 676 and early cathedral singing schools. The earliest surviving school records are much later. Cathedral learning also helped preserve the written culture described in our medieval documentary-history coverage.

#4 St Peter’s School, York — 627 AD
St Peter’s School, York, dates its roots to Saint Paulinus in AD 627. Its history includes scholar Alcuin, who later worked for Charlemagne. York’s local historic-environment record cautions that unbroken institutional continuity is disputed.

#3 King’s School Rochester — 604 AD
King’s School Rochester traces teaching beside Rochester Cathedral to AD 604. Henry VIII reconstituted its foundation during the Reformation, and its cathedral-choir-school traditions remain central to its identity.

#2 The King’s School Canterbury — 597 AD
The King’s School Canterbury looks back to the educational institutions formed after Augustine’s arrival in AD 597. Its own archive says the earliest school’s precise history cannot be verified, while its modern charter dates to 1541.

#1 Chengdu Shishi High School — c. 141 BCE
Chengdu Shishi High School stands at a site linked to Governor Wen Weng’s state school around 141 BCE. Rebuilding and later re-foundations complicate claims of continuous operation, but this remains a remarkable Han-era educational lineage. China’s later innovations in paper money emerged in a very different educational world.

The ages shown in the chart are approximate, measured to 2026 using attributed dates—not verified years of uninterrupted teaching. Older civilizations had schools, but identifying one surviving institution across millennia is far harder than comparing founding traditions. The contrast with today’s online, open-access courses illustrates how education keeps changing.
