Which universities have the longest educational histories while still teaching students in 2026? This countdown ranks seven surviving higher-learning lineages by traditional founding or earliest documented teaching dates. These are not equivalent university-charter dates. Our oldest schools countdown similarly distinguishes institutional ancestry from uninterrupted modern form.

#7 University of Padua, Italy — 1222

Padua’s own history traces its university to scholars who left Bologna seeking academic freedom. Its medical and astronomy traditions later attracted Galileo, while Elena Cornaro Piscopia earned a degree here in 1678. The university now teaches and researches across numerous fields.

#2 Al-Azhar University, Cairo, Egypt — c. 970–972

Al-Azhar began as a Fatimid-era mosque and teaching center. Its institutional history describes reforms culminating in a 1961 law that added medicine, engineering and other modern faculties. Its historic learning tradition predates those modern university structures.

#1 Al-Qarawiyyin, Fez, Morocco — 859

Guinness World Records recognizes Al-Qarawiyyin, founded in 859, as the oldest surviving continuously operating educational institution. Traditional accounts credit Fatima al-Fihri. Its origins were mosque-based; its later university status must not be confused with a ninth-century European-style charter.

The distinction matters: a historian using the medieval European corporate university definition may rank Bologna first, while Guinness includes older African institutions of learning. Ancient teaching systems also preceded every campus here. For a modern contrast, see free university robotics courses on GitHub and our ancient cities countdown.
