ANN ARBOR, Michigan — The University of Michigan Robotics Department is drawing renewed attention for its free online robotics courses, with lecture videos, textbooks, software and assignments available through GitHub and YouTube. A widely shared October 2026 post by robotics commentator Lukas Ziegler highlighted the collection, which stretches from introductory engineering mathematics to graduate-level robotics.
The university’s official online course directory lists eight classes: ROB 101, 102, 201, 311, 320, 501, 502 and 530. Materials are distributed across repositories and course sites rather than one downloadable degree package. Several offerings originated years before this week’s social-media attention.

From Introductory Mathematics to Robot Building
The free resources serve different levels of experience. ROB 101: Computational Linear Algebra, first offered in 2020, connects matrices, numerical methods and programming to real engineering problems. ROB 201: Calculus for the Modern Engineer uses the Julia programming language for applied mathematics and control.
The ROB 311 course takes students into design and fabrication, using a ballbot that balances and moves on a basketball. Its public materials include lecture videos and hardware plans, but participation in the physical labs still requires equipment, tools and components.

Graduate learners can explore ROB 501: Mathematics for Robotics, which covers least squares, matrix factorization, Kalman filtering and optimization. Its repository includes lecture notes, textbooks, assignments and examinations from an earlier course offering.

Free Materials Are Not a Free Degree
The viral description that Michigan placed its “entire robotics degree” on GitHub goes further than the department’s own wording. Michigan says it publishes many courses online; open course content does not itself confer enrollment, academic credit or a university degree. Some materials are incomplete: ROB 311 identifies an unpublished midterm, while ROB 201 says certain full project specifications are available to faculty upon request.
For self-directed learners, the collection provides a structured route from mathematical foundations to mechanical systems and robot programming. The practical gap remains access to hardware, assessment and instruction. That distinction matters as automation employers invest in facilities such as FANUC’s planned Michigan robotics site and technicians seek skills covered in our robot preventive-maintenance lesson.
