Nokia announced on November 4, 2026, that Hotwire Communications selected its networking equipment for a new IP network in North Carolina, with the system expected to go live in early 2027. The companies are preparing the regional broadband operator’s infrastructure for increasing residential, enterprise and AI-related traffic. Nokia’s announcement describes the architecture as “AI-fabric-ready,” but the deployment is not yet operational.
The design centers on the Nokia 7750 Service Router, which combines IP packet routing with optical transport interfaces. Integrating functions that previously required separate network elements can shorten the path traffic crosses, simplify management and reduce the number of powered devices. Nokia and Hotwire expect lower latency and reduced cooling requirements; neither company disclosed measured before-and-after latency, energy savings, network capacity, contract value or individual deployment sites.

The new agreement follows a different Hotwire experiment. In October, Hotwire and Cisco reported an 800G Ethernet demonstration across existing South Florida fiber. That Florida test established transport capability on a specific route, whereas Nokia’s North Carolina project concerns a broader routing architecture scheduled for future service. The companies have not said that Nokia equipment will replace Cisco equipment used in the trial.
The 7750 router family supports various IP edge, backbone and data center gateway roles, with some configurations offering 400-gigabit and 800-gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Those product specifications describe available hardware options, not the port speeds or total throughput Hotwire has purchased. Optical transceivers, covered in BitcoinVersus.Tech’s technical guide to SFP and QSFP links, remain essential for converting electrical network signals into light carried over fiber.

Nokia’s strategy also reflects a broader convergence between packet switching and optical networking. Pluggable coherent optics can make IP-layer systems directly handle some long-distance lightwave connections, potentially reducing dedicated transponder layers. Such designs still depend on fiber quality, optical engineering, routing policy and monitoring. The planned Hotwire network is a distinct project from Bluebird Fiber’s 400G Tera-Core backbone expansion, which targets capacity growth along established routes.

Why does a regional operator need AI-ready transport? AI applications can add interactive and machine-to-machine traffic, creating stronger demands for responsive uploads and reliable connections. Yet AI traffic by itself does not establish that a redesigned router will accelerate every customer application. End-to-end performance also depends on last-mile links, cloud-server distance, congestion and application processing. Nokia has separately discussed AI-assisted improvements to wireless network capacity, a separate technology from Hotwire’s fixed-network project.
Energy efficiency claims require comparable measurements under real loads. Removing hardware may reduce rack space, electrical consumption and cooling demand, but results depend on the number and model of devices removed, traffic volume and the replacement equipment’s draw. A system that combines functions must also be evaluated for fault isolation, redundancy, software maintenance and recovery after failures. Nokia’s security features do not, by themselves, verify the protection settings Hotwire will deploy.
Independent trade reporting by SDxCentral likewise describes a future North Carolina rollout. The key next milestone is the targeted early-2027 activation, followed by published topology details, measured latency, availability, power use and customer service results. Until then, the announcement establishes a vendor selection and engineering plan rather than demonstrated network performance.
