Cryptocurrency exchange Binance named Justin Yek to succeed Chief Financial Officer Kaiser Ng on November 7, 2026, according to a statement from co-CEO Yi He reported by Reuters. Ng is departing after more than five years at the company to pursue a new venture. The company said its leadership transition had been planned for approximately six months, before the October 29 cyberattack that affected about $6.34 billion in digital assets. The timing is confirmed; a causal link between the succession and breach is not.

A crypto exchange’s finance chief oversees financial reporting, capital allocation, liquidity planning and treasury controls. Those functions are especially important when the platform must replace lost customer assets, support withdrawals and provide evidence of reserve backing. The appointment therefore represents a governance change at a consequential point in Binance’s recovery, without itself proving any deficiency in the previous CFO’s work.

Binance says the handover predates the breach

Yi He said Ng would leave for another venture and that the succession plan had been implemented during the preceding half-year. Neither the Reuters account nor The Block’s November 7 report gives a final day for Ng, a first day for Yek or details of Ng’s future company. Ng had served as CFO since January 2022 and previously worked at cryptocurrency exchange Kraken.

The October 29 incident occurred nine days before the leadership announcement. Earlier BitcoinVersus.Tech reporting on the $6.34 billion attack covered the reported employee-device compromises and North Korea attribution. Those allegations and operational failures remain separate from the announced personnel decision; no evidence in the succession statement blames either finance executive for the hack.

Yek brings payments and banking experience

Yek most recently served as Airwallex’s vice president of finance. An Airwallex announcement from February 2023 documented his appointment as head of strategic finance and corporate development, following more than a decade in banking, finance and startups, including Morgan Stanley and Citi. In a March 2026 article authored by Yek, Airwallex identified him as vice president of finance and described his experience leading its global finance function.

His background spans traditional banking and cross-border payments, where liquidity, reconciliation and financial controls are central operating considerations. However, the public appointment does not establish a new Binance audit, altered risk policy or completed post-incident capital plan. Those outcomes require separate disclosures and testing.

Replenished customer assets are not recovered stolen funds

Binance’s November 3 incident update said approximately 98% of impacted token assets had been replenished as of October 31 using company-controlled resources. It separately estimated $2.85 billion frozen or intercepted, subject to reconciliation and market fluctuations. Asset replenishment, stolen-asset freezing and actual restitution are different measures; they should not be added together as though each represents separate recovered property.

The company previously explained that its capital sources included the SAFU emergency fund, part of its futures insurance fund and corporate treasury. Its proof-of-reserves snapshot covers user asset backing, but does not alone establish total corporate solvency or eliminate operational liabilities. Related blockchain tracing of hacker-controlled bitcoin records asset movements; it is not evidence that customer withdrawals have fully normalized.

The financial leadership shift also raises governance questions shared by other centralized exchanges. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently examined institutional custody arrangements that separate trading exposure from asset storage and FinCEN’s MEXC restrictions. Neither case implies wrongdoing by Yek or Ng, but both demonstrate how reserve verification, governance and financial-market access shape exchange confidence.

The next verifiable milestones are Yek’s effective start date, Ng’s formal departure, Binance’s updated reserve and financial disclosures, and the status of remaining customer reimbursements and withdrawals. The succession is confirmed; its long-term impact remains unmeasured.

Editor’s Note: The November 7 appointment and approximately six-month planned-transition statement were reported by Reuters and independently corroborated by The Block; a separate direct Binance personnel notice was not found. The successor’s professional history was confirmed against Airwallex’s 2023 leadership release and Yek’s March 2026 commentary. Hack figures and reserve-replenishment status derive from Binance’s November 3 company update, not an independent financial audit. Company reports of deposited reserves, replacement funds and frozen stolen funds are distinct measures. An authentic Binance image and two verified archived videos from Binance’s official YouTube channel provide context; neither video documents the CFO succession. Independent video playback, desktop/mobile viewport inspection and financial statement auditing have not been performed.
