ARM architecture is a family of reduced instruction set computing (RISC) processor architectures developed around efficient, simplified instruction execution.
ARM-based chips are widely used in smartphones, embedded systems, networking equipment, automotive electronics, IoT devices, servers, and increasingly AI and high-performance computing platforms.
Unlike traditional x86 processors, ARM designs emphasize power efficiency, scalability, and high performance per watt. Companies can license ARM instruction sets or processor designs and integrate them into custom system-on-chip (SoC) platforms containing CPU cores, memory controllers, GPUs, AI accelerators, networking interfaces, and other specialized hardware.
ARM architectures are also organized into different architecture profiles based on their intended workloads.
The A-profile (Application) is designed for high-performance operating systems and applications, including smartphones, servers, and computers.
The R-profile (Real-time) targets deterministic, low-latency systems such as automotive controllers, storage devices, and industrial equipment.
The M-profile (Microcontroller) is optimized for small, power-efficient embedded systems, sensors, IoT devices, and microcontrollers.
Architecture generations may therefore appear as Armv8-A, Armv8-R, Armv8-M, or Armv9-A, depending on the processor class and supported feature set.
Modern ARM architectures, including Armv8 and Armv9, support technologies such as 64-bit computing, virtualization, advanced security, SIMD/vector processing, and multicore designs. ARM technology powers processors from companies such as Apple, Qualcomm, AWS, NVIDIA, Ampere, MediaTek, and numerous embedded semiconductor manufacturers.
