Canaan Bitcoin Miners Now Heat 2,800 Nordic Homes

Canaan says an approximately 8 MW Bitcoin mining heat-recovery installation in the Nordic region is now fully online and delivering heat to roughly 2,800 homes.

The system uses Canaan Avalon A1566HA hydro-cooled ASIC miners. Canaan says the machines produce hot water at approximately 80°C that can feed directly into an existing district heating network. The project began with about 2 MW of capacity before an additional 6 MW was ordered.

The September update is important because the full 8 MW installation is now described by Canaan as operational rather than merely planned. It expands the same basic engineering idea BitcoinVersus.tech recently examined in Canaan’s 3 MW Manitoba greenhouse project: move ASIC heat into a useful water loop instead of rejecting it into the atmosphere.

Canaan is also pushing heat reuse toward smaller installations. At BTCHEL in Helsinki, the company showcased the Avalon Nano 3S, Mini 3 and AvalonQ home miners. The Mini 3 combines 37.5 TH/s of mining capacity with up to 800 watts of heating output, according to Canaan.

The Nordic customer’s identity and project economics have not been publicly disclosed, so the installation does not by itself establish that hash-to-heat will be economical everywhere. It does provide another operating example of Bitcoin mining hardware being designed as both computing infrastructure and a controllable thermal source.
