Gaming: Gears of War: E-Day Turns Horde Into a 12-Player Siege

Three squads of armored soldiers defending a ruined city against a large alien horde

Gears of War: E-Day reaches full release on October 6 with one of the biggest changes to the series’ multiplayer formula in years: Horde Siege expands co-op survival into a 12-player mode built around three squads operating on the same map. Xbox Wire’s October 1 launch update says the mode uses larger maps, class-based squads, shared objectives and large coordinated encounters.

The structure changes Horde from one defensive group into a distributed team system. Players still face escalating challenges, but squads can be working on different objectives at the same time and converge when the map calls for shared coordination.

Xbox On breaks down Horde Siege, including its larger maps, class roles, multi-squad structure and shared PvE objectives.

Three Squads, One Shared Map

Horde Siege divides players into three four-person squads. Each squad can use one of four roles—Assault, Marksman, Medic or Breacher—while moving through objectives across the same large environment. Optional objectives and large shared encounters can pull squads together, so success depends on coordination beyond a single team.

E-Day Is Also a Technical Reset

E-Day is built from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5 and pairs the series’ cover-based design with more vertical movement, vaulting and traversal. The Verge’s review praised the presentation and core gameplay while arguing that some broader design choices are less consistent.

The launch also lands inside a wider Xbox reset. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered Microsoft shifting the next Halo project to Activision, Xbox expanding disc-to-digital access, and GTA 2 receiving full path tracing through RTX Remix. Together, those stories show how platform strategy, distribution and rendering technology are all changing at once.

For E-Day, the immediate question is whether Horde Siege’s scale improves the cooperative formula. Twelve players, three squads and shared objectives create room for much larger encounters, but the mode will depend on pacing, role clarity and whether every squad remains meaningful throughout a match.
