SpaceX is moving Starlink Mobile closer to becoming a full U.S. wireless carrier. The company says a new nationwide 800 MHz spectrum deal could help it build a hybrid satellite-and-ground network that works indoors, outdoors and in traditional cellular dead zones.
Fox Business frames the move as Elon Musk trying to create a fourth major U.S. phone company alongside AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile. That is a useful shorthand, but SpaceX itself has been more precise: it says Starlink Mobile could become a “major mobile carrier in the US”. It has not formally declared itself the fourth national carrier.
The technical shift is significant. SpaceX agreed to acquire up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum, subject to FCC approval. Lower-band spectrum generally travels farther and penetrates buildings better than higher-frequency signals. Reuters reported that the move is aimed directly at expanding Starlink Mobile beyond satellite-only coverage.
BitcoinVersus previously covered why the 800 MHz deal matters indoors, the FCC’s direct-to-device spectrum push, and Starlink V3 deployment. The open question is whether Starlink can turn those pieces into a network that competes with terrestrial carriers at nationwide scale.
