GitHub Now Blocks Anthropic API Keys Before Push

Cybersecurity shield blocking an exposed API key before files reach a code repository

GitHub has expanded secret scanning so repositories with the feature enabled can now block pushes containing Anthropic user or service API keys by default.

According to GitHub’s October 13 changelog, the new detectors cover anthropic_service_api_key and anthropic_user_api_key. Push protection can stop those credentials before the commit is accepted, rather than only alerting after the secret lands in repository history.

GitHub explains how secret scanning and push protection catch exposed credentials before they spread through a repository.

A blue-team experiment using live canary credentials shows how quickly exposed keys in public GitHub repositories can attract automated attention.

GitHub also added Salesforce as a secret-scanning partner for Marketing Cloud OAuth2 tokens. When a supported partner secret is found in a public repository, GitHub can report it to the issuer so the credential can be revoked or rotated.

The change arrives alongside GitHub’s new secret-detection model, which the company says improved weighted alert acceptance by 11.5% while cutting median post-push scan time by 86%.

GitHub’s security team explains the broader Secret Protection product and the role of push protection.

A security discussion tracks the growing volume of AI API-key patterns appearing in public GitHub code and the need for pre-push protection and rotation.

The practical takeaway is simple: secret scanning is moving earlier in the development path. That fits a broader shift BitcoinVersus.Tech has covered in GitHub’s infrastructure changes for AI-driven development, our API vs. SDK explainer, and our guide to passkey-based authentication.
