This countdown ranks road-car internal-combustion engines by engine-only peak power. Electric-motor output does not count. Track-only cars are excluded. Factory-supported high-output fuels such as E85 do count when the manufacturer explicitly rates the engine for them. Power density—horsepower per liter—is included as a second metric because displacement matters. That keeps a hybrid car’s electric assistance separate from the combustion engine itself; for context, see our explainer on what a hybrid car actually is.
| Rank | Engine | Displacement | Peak engine output | Approx. power density |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 | Dodge Demon 170 HEMI V8 | 6.2 L | 1,025 hp | 165 hp/L |
| 6 | Zenvo Aurora V12 | 6.6 L | 1,250 bhp | 189 bhp/L |
| 5 | Koenigsegg Gemera HV8 | 5.0 L | 1,500 hp | 300 hp/L |
| 4 | Bugatti Chiron Super Sport W16 | 8.0 L | 1,600 PS (~1,578 hp) | ~197 hp/L |
| 3 | Koenigsegg Jesko V8 | 5.0 L | 1,600 hp | 320 hp/L |
| 2 | SSC Tuatara V8 | 5.9 L | 1,750 hp | 297 hp/L |
| 1 | Hennessey Venom F5 Evolution V8 | 6.6 L | 2,031 bhp | 308 bhp/L |
7. Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 — 1,025 hp
Dodge’s 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8 makes 1,025 hp at 6,500 rpm and 945 lb-ft at 4,200 rpm on E85. That works out to roughly 165 hp per liter. Dodge also rates it at 900 hp on premium gasoline, making the ethanol content part of the factory power strategy. Dodge’s technical release documents the full output.
6. Zenvo Aurora V12 — 1,250 bhp
Zenvo’s Aurora uses a 6.6-liter quad-turbo V12 developed with MAHLE Powertrain. The combustion engine alone is rated at 1,250 bhp and can rev to 9,800 rpm, or about 189 bhp per liter. Hybrid motors can raise total vehicle output to 1,850 bhp, but they are excluded here. Zenvo identifies it as the most powerful V12 fitted to a road car.
5. Koenigsegg Gemera HV8 — 1,500 hp
The Gemera’s compact 5.0-liter twin-turbo Hot V8 produces 1,500 hp and 1,500 Nm before the electric motor contributes anything. That is a striking 300 hp per liter. Koenigsegg’s own specification separates the HV8 from the 800-hp Dark Matter electric motor, which is why the engine can be ranked cleanly here. Koenigsegg lists the engine and motor outputs independently.
4. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport W16 — 1,600 PS
Bugatti’s 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 reaches 1,600 PS, roughly 1,578 mechanical horsepower, with 1,600 Nm of torque. That is about 197 hp per liter. Its specific output is lower than the smaller engines above it, but the W16 combines huge displacement with four turbochargers and a very broad torque plateau. Bugatti details the 1,600-PS engine here.
3. Koenigsegg Jesko V8 — 1,600 hp
The Jesko’s 5.0-liter twin-turbo V8 makes 1,280 hp on gasoline and 1,600 hp on E85, plus up to 1,500 Nm of torque. Its 320 hp per liter is the highest specific output in this countdown. Koenigsegg also gives the engine an 8,500-rpm redline and an unusually light 12.5-kg flat-plane crankshaft. The factory specification lists both fuel-dependent outputs.
2. SSC Tuatara V8 — 1,750 hp
SSC’s road-legal Tuatara uses a bespoke 5.9-liter twin-turbo flat-plane V8 rated at 1,750 hp on E85 and 1,350 hp on 91-octane gasoline. That is about 297 hp per liter. SSC’s non-road-legal Aggressor can go higher, but it is excluded by this ranking’s road-car rule. SSC’s current Tuatara specification confirms the 1,750-hp road-car figure.
1. Hennessey Venom F5 Evolution V8 — 2,031 bhp
Hennessey’s revised 6.6-liter twin-turbo “Fury” V8 takes No. 1 with 2,031 bhp at 8,000 rpm and 1,445 lb-ft at 5,200 rpm on E85. That is about 308 bhp per liter. Hennessey says the Evolution is the world’s most powerful 100% internal-combustion road car, and its engine output is more than double the Demon 170’s. Hennessey published the final validated figures in 2025.
The most interesting result is not just the 2,031-bhp winner. The Jesko leads this group in power density, while the Chiron shows what enormous displacement and sustained torque can do. Hybridization changes the comparison again, as seen in the Gemera and Aurora; the same transition is reshaping the broader auto industry alongside new EV battery systems and the increasingly electrified vehicles appearing at events such as the 2026 Paris Motor Show.
