Black Forest Labs released FLUX 3 Image Klein on October 15, 2026, opening the weights for a 5.6-billion-parameter model built for image generation, editing and multi-reference composition. The official release says Klein supports native 4K output, bounding-box layout control and as many as 10 reference images in one generation.
Klein ships as a base checkpoint for fine-tuning and research plus a distilled 16-step version for lower-latency inference. Black Forest Labs also provides FP8, INT8 and NVFP4 variants. VentureBeat reports that the INT8 build can run on systems with 8 GB of GPU memory, putting a capable modern image model within reach of many consumer PCs.
The release extends the same FLUX 3 family covered in our FLUX 3 Video pricing update. It also fits the broader move toward local inference and lower deployment costs discussed in our model-routing explainer and our coverage of NVIDIA opening more AI tools to European researchers.
The important distinction is that “open weights” is not the same as unrestricted open-source software. Klein is released under the FLUX Kommunity License, with separate terms for larger commercial deployments. For developers, however, the technical shift is clear: high-resolution generation, precise editing and reference-driven composition are moving onto smaller hardware footprints.
