Ron DeSantis Says Florida Will Make Tesla’s Flying Roadster Legal

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says his state intends to clear a path for Tesla’s airborne Roadster, one day after the company publicly demonstrated the car using cold-gas thrusters to leave the ground.

Responding to the Roadster demonstration on October 16, DeSantis wrote on X: “We will make sure that it’s legal — at a minimum could be used to leapfrog golf carts in the Villages.” The comment was partly a joke, but the policy signal was direct: Florida’s governor is publicly saying the state should accommodate the new vehicle rather than prohibit it outright.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says the state will make sure Tesla’s flying Roadster is legal.

Tesla actually showed the Roadster leaving the ground

The statement follows Tesla’s October 15 Roadster reveal in Texas. BitcoinVersus.Tech documented the demonstration in Tesla Roadster Flies, after the prototype used onboard propulsion to perform brief airborne maneuvers. The same event also produced Tesla’s sub-one-second 0–60 mph claim.

Tesla described the Roadster hardware as combining active aero, multi-mode suction and cold-gas thrusters.

The engineering combines systems more familiar to aerospace than ordinary passenger cars. Cold-gas thrusters can create force without depending on tire grip, while the Roadster’s suction system can increase downforce dramatically. The concept is still a road vehicle first, but its propulsion hardware crosses into territory normally associated with rockets and attitude-control systems. DeSantis can influence Florida law, but that is not the whole approval process

DeSantis’s statement should not be read as meaning the flying configuration is already street legal. Tesla’s most extreme Rocket configuration is not currently approved for public-road use, and Elon Musk said during the reveal that legality would depend on the jurisdiction. Reuters reported that production is targeted for 2028, leaving time for engineering, certification and regulatory work.

Florida can control major parts of vehicle registration, road-use rules and state traffic law, and the state has already positioned itself as friendly to advanced transportation. But federal motor-vehicle safety requirements still apply to vehicles sold for road use in the United States. Manufacturers must certify compliance with applicable federal safety standards, while any sustained airborne operation could create a separate aviation-regulation question.

That makes DeSantis’s promise politically meaningful but not self-executing. Florida could remove state-level barriers or create a legal framework for the Roadster’s road use, but the final production vehicle would still have to satisfy whatever federal requirements apply to its configuration.

Florida may become an early test case

The larger question is whether a vehicle that can drive normally and perform short thruster-assisted hops should be regulated only as a car, partly as an aircraft, or through a new category. Tesla’s prototype makes that question less theoretical than it was a week ago.

For now, the verified facts are narrower: Tesla demonstrated a Roadster briefly flying under onboard propulsion, the Rocket configuration is not yet approved for public-road use, and Florida’s governor has publicly committed to making sure the vehicle can be legal in his state. What that legal framework looks like has not yet been announced.
